About the South Dakota Dashboard

The South Dakota Dashboard is an online community information service that provides people with reliable, up-to-date, trend data on South Dakota. We help citizens and community leaders access statewide and local data and statistics for decision-making, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life in our communities. The South Dakota Dashboard is a project of the Black Hills Knowledge Network.

Our main geographic focus is the state of South Dakota. We aggregate data at a multitude of levels including metropolitan/micropolitan regions, counties, cities, and American Indian reservations. Our data comes from many federal and state sources and is available in easy-to-use charts, graphs, and maps. We collect and manage this data with help from our partners at Wilder Research and with support from the Bush Foundation. We also collaborate on data projects with various partners including the Data Center at South Dakota State University, Kids Count, and more.

Data on the Dashboard covers a variety of statewide community indicators ranging from income to diabetes to youth, and can be broken down by all counties and major towns in South Dakota, as well as by age, race, or gender. With each of the major topic areas, we also provide an "Overview" section that includes recent data-related news stories and posts that we have aggregated to provide context to the numbers. As the project grows, we hope these stories will help users get the analysis they need to support strategic planning, policymaking, and business development.

In addition to our core activity of providing statewide content online, we provide a limited amount of free technical assistance and training to many local nonprofits, governments, researchers, and community organizations, as well as the general public. We are also available on a fee-for-service basis to help with larger data projects, report writing, needs assessments, and assistance with grant proposals or reports. Funding and Support

The South Dakota Dashboard is a project of the Black Hills Knowledge Network and reflects the work and investment of a growing number of partners. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Bush Foundation have provided major funding for this project.

The data is powered and formatted from federal and state sources by Wilder Research. Impetus for the project comes from Minnesota Compass, a social indicators project led by Wilder Research. Additional state and local level data is provided by the SDSU Rural Life and Census Data Center. These data partners, plus our sister project North Dakota Compass, form a tri-state cohort dedicated to providing reliable, timely and intelligible statistics for our region.
