#SDbythenumbers: South Dakota Housing

  1. Since the turn of the century, South Dakota's homeownership rate has hovered just below 70 percent.
  2. In 2014, South Dakota ranked 12th among other states for homeownership rates at 68.2 percent. West Virginia had the highest rate at 72.2 percent. 
  3. Homeownership rates in South Dakota are about the same in rural and urban areas.
  4. Harrisburg has the highest rate of homeownership in South Dakota at 84.9 percent
  5. Citizens ages 35-64 as well as 65 and older have the highest rate of homeownership in South Dakota. 76.0 percent of residents of both of these age groups own their home.
  6. Hanson County has the highest rate of homeownership in South Dakota at 86.5 percent and is followed closely by Deuel County at 83.8 percent.
  7. Almost 40 percent of renters pay 30 percent or more of their income on rent, while only 17.4 percent of homeowners do the same.
  8. About 24 percent of those living in South Dakota are housing cost-burdened*. This is the 3rd lowest rate in the nation. California ranks number 1, at 44.0 percent.
  9. The Black Hills Region has a higher percentage of housing cost-burdened residents than the rest of South Dakota (30 percent versus the state average of 25 percent).
  10. Among American Indian reservations, Yankton reservation has the highest homeownership rate at 66.4 percent. Crow Creek reservation has the lowest at 36.5 percent.
